GETTING AROUND:
Download Google Maps for your smartphone and search the city/cities you'll be traveling to. In the menu, select Offline Maps, and there is an option to download the current view to your phone as an offline map. GPS does not require data or wifi, and you can access the map you save offline while making your way through the city.
In Europe, the RailPlanner App is free and runs without data or wifi. It features train schedules across Europe.

ACCOMMODATIONS:

Hostels - www.hostels.com, www.hihostels.com
Couchsurfing - www.couchsurfing.org
This organization seeks to connect travelers looking for a local's experience of the places they visit. The hosts open their homes to surfers for free and share experiences with them, or surfers might up while traveling for coffee. There are also events planned in some cities where members of that city can get together and do different activities.
I have personally hosted once which was a great experience (if a bit crazy for the girl I hosted)!
Since joining, I have been a "surfer" three times. All three were extremely positive experiences and I felt like I gained a lot by staying with a local as opposed to staying in a hostel for the duration of my trip. For interesting information about Couchsurfing, have a look at this infographic!
